Michael Mantha

MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin

About Michael

Michael Mantha is currently serving in his second consecutive term as MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin. He's the NDP critic for Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation and critic for Northern Development and Mines.  Michael has a proven record as a strong voice for rural healthcare, safe road conditions, northern jobs and economic development plus affordability for northerners. Throughout his career Michael has worked hard for northern workers and improving the lives of northern families.

Prior to first being elected in October 2011, Michael worked with federal Member of Parliament Carol Hughes, advocating for constituents on a multitude of issues. He has also worked with the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities; helping displaced workers access needed social services and training. Michael also served as a Labour Representative for 17 years and spent 4 years with the United Steelworkers Local 1-2693.

As MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin, Michael has worked hard to bring about meaningful change to help northern Ontarians. He has introduced legislation to remove the HST from heating bills and has been a strong proponent to update legislation regarding ATV’s to meet current technological standards. When independent northern and rural fuel retailers survival was at risk due to Technical Standards & Safety Authority (TSSA) policies, Michael was instrumental in having the policies reviewed. The revised TSSA policies now ensure public safety following reasonable, achievable business plans.  Michael was also successful in having unanimous party consent for his private member’s bill calling on the government to develop an integrated strategy to battle Lyme disease in Ontario. He also successfully passed a bill defending grandparents' rights.

Michael’s face and handshake are well known all across the riding as he enjoys meeting people where they live, work and play; talking with constituents at the multitude of events held throughout the riding year round. Michael lives in Elliot Lake and is the father of two boys.
